In this article, we bring you ‘Laws Whiskey House.’

Site and location:

Laws Whiskey House is located in Denver, Colorado, where the distillery and tasting room are on site. To the east of the area is Rocky Mountain National Park, and further down the site is San Luis Valley, where one of the Laws Whiskey grain suppliers is established.

The Range:

Laws Whiskey House offers a superb range of bourbon, rye, and limited-edition whiskeys. The spirit is created from heirloom and heritage grain, supplied by two farms: the Cody Family Farm (aka Colorado Malting Company) in the San Luis Valley and Ohnmachts (aka Whiskey Sisters Supply) in the Colorado Plains.

About the whiskey:

The bourbons:

Four Grain Straight (47.5%abv) aged 3+yrs

Four Grain Bottled in Bond (50%abv) aged 7+yrs

Four Grain Straight, Cask (varied) aged 3+ yrs

The Mashbill for these bourbons is:

60% corn, 20% heirloom wheat, 10% heirloom rye, 10% heirloom malted barley

More notes can be found on all the whiskies at the Laws Whiskey Website, link at the end of the article.

The Ryes:

San Luis Valley Straight: 47.5% abv, aged 4+yrs

San Luis Valley Bottled in Bond: 50% abv, aged 7+yrs

San Luis Valley Cask: abv varies; aged 3+yrs

Mashbill for these Ryes: 100% Heirloom rye

The Limited release range is a collection of small batch whiskies, made on a seasonal basis. The range includes the Headwater series, a "Call to action" bourbon created to help raise awareness about the importance of sustainability, water health, and the conservation of Colorado's rivers.

The range also includes a variety of different cask finishes, where the team matures the spirit in casks such as calvados or Madeira, for example.

The Rackhouse series focuses on the uniqueness of the barrels and how marrying spirits and finishing in different casks can affect the final product.

With many other expressions in the Limited Release range, you can see how seriously Laws Whiskey House takes provenance, innovation and whiskey production.

Why choose Laws Whiskey House?

Since around 2011, making whiskey has been a huge passion of the founder, Al Laws. Not just making whiskey, but innovating, experimenting, digging deeper into the science around terroir, and working in a sustainable manner that supports local farms and the environment.

Knowing where your ingredients come from and how they are grown is of utmost importance to Laws. So, they work at having close, supportive relationships with their suppliers. Corn comes from "Whiskey Sisters Supply" and wheat and rye from "Colorado Malting Company." These business relationships benefit not only the distillery itself but also the farms' businesses.

Terroir is a term traditionally associated with the wine industry. However, logically, it applies to all foods that grow from the soil beneath our feet. That soil, the height above sea level, the air, the sun—all these aspects will affect the grain produced by the farms. We know that a strawberry grown in one corner of the globe will taste different from the same variety grown somewhere else. It's this curiosity and approach that makes Laws Whiskey standout.

With taglines such as "Above all, whiskey" and, more importantly, "There are no shortcuts," you can be sure that Laws Whiskey House will endeavor to create the best whiskey possible for its consumers.

An award-winning distillery:

Most recently, Laws Whiskey House won the World Whisky Awards for its Four Grain Cask Strength Bourbon. The whiskey was awarded the Worlds Best Small Batch Bourbon, 2024.

In the past, it has also been awarded Best American Rye Whiskey aged 12 years or under at the World Whisky Awards in 2020.
