In this new edition of the series, we bring you ‘El Mexicano.’
First, let us address the thoughts running around your mind.
Yes, we usually deal with whiskey/bourbon at Barrel Global, and yes, we are about to talk to you about tequila and an opportunity for you to purchase your own tequila cask.
Barrel Global has a sister company called 'InBarrel.’ InBarrel specializes in working with tequila, where you can label and bottle your own tequila. You can find out more here: About Us – InBarrelTequila
It is our great pleasure to offer our current and potential clients the opportunity to purchase El Mexicano tequila in the same way we offer whiskey/bourbon.
Why tequila?
Apart from the ease of bringing this opportunity to you, tequila and whiskey/bourbon share a few traits. While tequila historically has a "party" drink reputation, in recent years, it has become a spirit associated with quality, taste, and unique flavor profiles.
Like whiskey, tequila uses three main ingredients: agave, water, and yeast.
It, too, produces a white spirit that benefits from time in wooden barrels.
There are 4 main styles of tequila.
1- Blanco - Unlike whiskey, tequila can be bottled as a white spirit straight from distillation and filtering.
2- Reposado - aged for at least 2 months in oak wood.
3- Anejo - aged for at least 1 year.
4- Extra anejo – aged for at least 3 years.
Like whiskey, those barrels will influence its final flavor profile.
The tequila we can offer our clients from El Mexicano has been aged in ex-chardonnay casks from the Napa Valley. This combination brings light and vibrant tones, including crisp green apples, light pear, subtle citrus notes, and some light oak.

Site and location:
Located in Arandas (at 2100m), Jalisco, Mexico, the owners of El Mexicano have chosen to create tequila here due to its terrain, which provides the perfect environment to make great tequila.
The distillery is located in Los Altos de Jalisco, one of the best agave-producing areas in Mexico. The land includes 2 deep wells, from which water for tequila production is obtained.
Altitude plays a significant role in the production of spirit. It impacts fermentation, distillation, and maturation.
The Range:
With 3 generations of tequila making behind the company, making a high-quality product comes as second nature.
The blue agave (Tequilana weber) used in El Mexicano products is harvested at a minimum of 6 years old, thus ensuring an optimum level of sugars needed to produce the blanco spirit.
The El Mexicano range of tequila includes:
Blanco: bottled after distillation, this spirit shows off the distillery character in its purest state. Immediate notes of the cooked agave plant are followed by light citrus, mint, and brine notes, with an herbaceous finish that balances the other flavors. El Mexicano also produces Tequila Blanco 45, which, at 45% ABV, is great for tequila-forward cocktails.
Reposado: rested for 90 days in new American and French oak barrels. This expression shows the impact of even a brief time maturing in different barrels. The American oak lends notes of vanilla, maple, and stone fruits, and the French oak gives some tobacco and wood. This balance of flavors extends to cocoa and creaminess, giving way to a long finish.
Tequila Anejo: Aged for 30 months in a combination of French Oak and New American oak barrels, this expression highlights the great notes from these barrels. The aging of the spirit adds further interest, including baking spices, cardamom, cinnamon, and clove. With a finish that gives coffee and cocoa notes, the master distiller recommends pairing this with a good cigar, high-fat meat, and some excellent quality 70% cocoa chocolates.
Tequila extra Anejo: Aged for 60 months in French Oak and New American oak barrels, this offering builds time onto the spirit. Similar notes to the Anejo come through, and the extra aging provides a depth of flavor that can only be achieved through time and patience.
What else can we say about El Mexicano?
While tequila as a category does not currently benefit from as many high-profile awards ceremonies and competitions as whiskey and bourbon do, El Mexicano is certainly raising eyebrows.
Noted as one of the top ten tequila distilleries by Tequila Matchmaker, we are excited to be collaborating with them. You can view what other tequila drinkers say about El Mexicano here: El Mexicano | Tequila Matchmaker
